Education in Kazakhstan
To be admitted to the institute one has to pass a series of oral or written tests. Marks in the certificate of secondary education are also taken into account. Entry to higher institution is quite competitive. Some college departments have dozens of applicants for one prospective student’s position. The system of higher education prepares highly-skilled experts on economy, transport, agriculture, medicine, languages and others.
Education in Kazakhstan has until recently been free on all levels. (75 words)

Shut the door
Jonathan Swift liked order in everything.All the people in his house, for example had to shut the door behind them when they came into the room or left it. One day a maid servant came and asked him to let her visit her sister who lived ten miles away. Swift not only agreed, but let her go there in his own carriage.The girl was so happy that she forgot to shut the door when she left the room. Swift let her go, but about half an hour later he ordered one of the servant to ride after the carriage and tell the girl come back. (106 words)
The Constitutional Court
The Constitutional Court, the highest judicial body in the land, decides whether laws and decrees, and also international contacts and agreements which the republic enters into, are in accordance with the Constitution. The presiding judge and other judges who make up the Constitutional Court are chosen by the Supreme Soviet on the recommendation of the President of the Republic for a term of ten years. The judges are independent and subordinate only to the Constitution and the laws of the land.
If the President or the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet does not lodge an objection to a decision of the Constitutional Court, it comes into force immediately. (107 words)

Ecological Problems
Since ancient times Nature has served man, being the source of his life. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment and it seemed to them that natural riches were unlimited. But with the development of civilization in nature began to increase.
Large cities with thousands of smoky industrial enterprises appear all over the world today. The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables on.
The pollution of air and the world’s ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of the ecological crises. (106 words)

The Painter
On the 25 October, 1881, a little boy was born in Malaga, Spain. It was a difficult birth and to help him breathe, cigar smoke was blown into his nose! But despite being the youngest ever smoker, this baby grew up to be one of the 20th century’s greatest painters – Pablo Picasso.
Picasso showed his truly exceptional talent from a very young age. His first word was lapis and he learned to draw before he could talk. He was the only son in the family and very good-looking, so he was thoroughly spoilt. He hated school and often refused to go unless his doting parents allowed him to take one of his father’s pet pigeons with him. (115 words)

The President
The President of the Republic is the head of state and chief executive. The President exercises the powers vested in him by the Constitution by issuing decrees, orders and resolutions. He signs the lows of republican significance and has the right to return to the Supreme Soviet the text of a law submitted to him for further consideration and repeat voting.
The President is assisted in his work by the Vice-President. With the agreement of the Supreme Soviet, the President appoints the Prime Minister, on whose recommendation the members of the Cabinet of Ministers are appointed. (96 words)
